Bachelor Thesis at ITscope

4.4.2023 | News A truly wonderful experience - The process of completing a final thesis at ITscope

Jonas Deterding wrote his Bachelor's thesis on artificial intelligence (AI) at ITscope.

While some students have their theses written by artificial intelligence, others opt to write about it. Jonas Deterding falls under the latter category. He wrote his bachelor's thesis at ITscope and we're here to explore the collaboration between ITscope, students, and the university.

KI in action

Jonas_Deterding_BU-2Jonas Deterding's bachelor thesis title, "Explainability and acceptance of a categorisation model in the ITC industry through techniques of Explainable AI," may sound a little daunting at first, but the content is fascinating. Deterding dives into examining how AI-generated explanations can enhance users' comprehension and trust in the machine learning model. It's a match!

The collaboration between the university and ITscope began with a hackathon a few years ago, where Jan Crommelinck, Product Manager at ITscope, and Malte Weiß, Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the Hochschule Ruhr West, got to know each other. "Jan Crommelinck approached me with the idea of offering a thesis on artificial intelligence," recalls Malte Weiß. "When a student inquired about an AI topic with me, it was a win-win situation." Jonas Deterding was thrilled about the opportunity to collaborate: "There was a get-to-know-you meeting with everyone involved, in which we decided to work together," says the Bachelor's graduate. "We agreed to focus on the categorisation of IT products and explore if an AI can provide support or even act autonomously."

Full of buzz about Machine Learning

Jonas Deterding was already pursuing a dual study program in applied computer science and working with a company in Oberhausen. However, the company was unable to offer him an AI-related topic, which led to his collaboration with ITscope. "I wanted to work on something that has practical implications, which I found at ITscope," says Deterding. He was provided with a vast database to work with, and his enthusiasm for the topic was evident in his intensive weeks of research. "Enthusiasm is key when it comes to working on a thesis topic," agrees his supervisor Malte Weiß.

From university to practice

Working with ITscope was an enriching experience for Jonas Deterding, as he was able to work remotely while still having a contact person available. The professor recommends writing a thesis at a company for students who want practical relevance and to familiarize themselves with the working culture of a company. "With ITscope, that was directly the case," said Malte Weiß, adding that if there is another match like that between the topic and the student, they will definitely cooperate again. As Jonas Deterding plans to start his Master's thesis at the beginning of 2024, he looks forward to seeing ITscope again in the future.
